US journal backs Pakistan on Indian moves against Indus Waters Treaty

Water politics in South Asia has taken a new turn after India suspended the Indus Waters Treaty.

According to The National Interest, the suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty will increase regional tensions. India’s Dulhasti Stage-II project is a step against the Indus Waters Treaty. India is turning water into a strategic weapon.

The National Interest further said that the water crisis could become a major humanitarian threat in South Asia. India’s withholding of water data is a violation of international law. The International Court of Arbitration has made it clear that India cannot unilaterally suspend the Indus Waters Treaty.

The Indus Waters Treaty is a basic guarantee of food security in South Asia. India is legally obliged to provide water from the western rivers to Pakistan.

According to the US journal, India’s attempt to weaponize water is unacceptable in the eyes of international courts and international law.
